Priority review for Montana INBRE Scholars Statewide applications begins on/about March 15 each year; however, applications may be submitted and will be reviewed up until May 15th.

Important: The Montana INBRE Scholars Statewide program described on this webpage is NOT intended for students enrolled at Montana State University-Bozeman, including MSU nursing students located at one of MSU's three off-campus locations (Missoula, Great Falls, Kalispell). All MSU Bozeman-enrolled students interested in summer research experiences should instead learn more about becoming a Montana INBRE Scholar at MSU.

Montana-based, non-MSU-Bozeman undergraduate students who want to do significant biomedical at their home institution or at another institution within the statewide Montana INBRE Network are encouraged to apply to this program. Research must be conducted in Montana under the guidance of a faculty mentor at a participating Montana INBRE Network institution. Students selected for this 10-week program will be expected to commit to full-time workload (~400 hours) and make a presentation (poster or podium) to report their findings.

To be considered for this program you must:

  • be enrolled in Montana as an undergraduate student during the spring semester directly preceding the upcoming summer term at a non-MSU-Bozeman institution within the Montana INBRE Network, including:
    • Aaniiih Nakoda College
    • Blackfeet Community College
    • Carroll College
    • Chief Dull Knife College
    • Flathead Valley Community College
    • Fort Peck Community College
    • Little Big Horn College
    • MSU - Billings
    • MSU - Northern
    • Montana Tech
    • Rocky Mountain College
    • Salish Kootenai College
    • Stone Child College
    • University of Montana
    • UM - Western 
  • be enrolled as a full time (> 12 credits) sophomore, junior, or senior in good academic standing for the upcoming fall semester
  • be a US citizen or authorized to work in the United States
  • INBRE Scholars are expected to dedicate 10 weeks of full-time commitment to a project between mid-May and mid-August
  • Depending on the year and other variables, there may be limited flexibility outside these dates, but approval should be sought from the Montana INBRE Student Program Director before applying

You don't have to own a lab coat to be a Montana INBRE Scholar. We define biomedical research broadly and support students from varying disciplines, including the life sciences, physical sciences, engineering, math, applied sciences and social sciences, as well as interdisciplinary fields like public health, community health, behavioral health and others. Typical areas of student research include:

  • Cell Biology and Neuroscience
  • Biochemistry
  • Biomedical Engineering (Biological, Chemical, Electrical or Mechanical)
  • Psychology
  • Computational Biology (including math, computer science)
  • Microbiology and Immunology
  • Nursing
  • Veterinary Medicine
  • Human Health and Development
  • Public and/or Community Health
  • Selected students receive a $7,000 stipend for the 10-week program
  • If the research will be conducted away from your home institution, limited travel costs may be covered by Montana INBRE upon reqest, funding permitting
  • If the research will be conducted away from your home institution, limited funding to cover shared dorm room or other economy accommodation for the specified 10-week program may be covered by Montana INBRE upon reqest, funding and housing availability permitting
  • Priority application deadline is March 15th
  • Applications may be submitted up until May 15th

Before you apply, make sure that you:

  1. are a US Citizen or authorized to work in the United States
  2. are enrolled as an undergraduate sophomore, junior, or senior during the upcoming fall semester at any academic institution located in Montana (except for MSU-Bozeman)
  3. have requested and received two letters of recommendation supporting your application, at least one from a current or former professor.
  4. have obtained .PDF copies of transcripts for any relevant college or university coursework previously completed (unofficial copies are acceptable)
